In Memorium
Dr. Dupree Jordan, a dynamic leader
and early champion of the speaking profession, succumbed from several ailments
on December 9, 2006. A memorial service
was held on December 11 in Roswell, Ga.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years,
“Marge,” and their four children. Dr. Jordan
was an ordained minister, and early supporter and fellow student of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. Dr. Jordan, who joined NSA in 1973,
became an avowed student of oratory
and formed a speaker’s bureau during the
60s, and was the first to produce a major
showcase held annually in Atlanta. Many
who were fledgling speakers owe their success to preview performances at a Jordan
Showcase.
“His gentlemanly and courteous manner
belied his intensity. He brought an ambitious
fervor to our profession, balanced with kindness and sensitivity to all of those with whom
he interacted,” says Dave Yoho, CPAE, past
national director.
Sharyn Scheyd, recipient of the NSA New Orleans Hero Award Billy
Acrement Award, passed
away on December 10
with a memorial service
held on January 6. As a
motivational speaker, Sharyn inspired audiences to reach their vision, particularly those
with disabilities. A certified laughter leader,
Sharyn co-founded the Bayou Laughter
Club, the first in Louisiana. ”Love the Life you
Live was a motto exemplified by Sharyn. It
was her privilege to be the caregiver for her
22-year-old disabled daughter and a
mother to her two grown sons. Her career
focused on empowering disabled children
and their parents to dream and achieve. As
a friend, she inspired us all,” says friend and
NSA member Jo Huey.

EDITOR’S NOTE:
In the story, “Robert Kiyosaki Roars
with Emotion” (January-February
2007), we incorrectly reported that
comedian Sam Kinison died from a
drug overdose. Kinison died tragically
in a car accident on his way to a
sold-out appearance in Laughlin,
Nevada. We regret the error.
