Drive Traffic, Boost Conversion rates and Make
Lots of Money by Jon rognerud
will show up in the search results, so make sure
that your page title meta tag is a marketing message
that attracts attention. For instance, the page title
for your home page might be, “Keynote speeches
for the financial industry.” If you don’t know what
a meta tag is or how to edit it, ask your Web site
designer or assistant to make the updates for you.
include your keywords in the main heading and sub-
headings on each page. Think how a non-fiction book
is organized: Every book has a series of chapters, and
within those chapters is a series of sub-topics. Your
Web site pages should be organized the same way,
using one main heading for each page. Technically,
this is called the “heading 1” tag or H1 tag, and a
series of sub-headings (called “heading 2” or H2
tags) to divide the text. This helps the visitor read
your pages and, by putting your keywords in the H1
and H2 tags, you will increase your site’s visibility.
put your keywords in your description meta tag.
The description tag consists of a paragraph of text
that describes the topic of the each page. Google
does read the description meta tag on each page
(even if it doesn’t display the information in the
search results), according to a recent interview with
Matt Cutts from Google. By adding your keywords
to your description meta tag, you help the
search engines determine the relevancy of
the page.
add text to the image tag behind graphics
on your site. Search engines cannot read text
that’s inside a graphic. To offset this, each
graphic has an “alternative text” tag (also
called an ALT tag) where you can input text,
including your keywords, that describes the
graphic.
Use keywords in internal hyperlinks. When
you link one page on your Web site to
another page on your Web site, it’s called
an internal hyperlink (also known as anchor
text). Search engines love this because they
want your Web site visitors to easily find the
pages they want. The more you cross-link
your pages to each other, the easier it is for a
visitor to navigate your site. Using your keywords in the text of the internal hyperlink
will increase your search rankings.
create outbound links. Search engines
want to know that you are giving site visitors
all the help they need. One way to help visitors is to link to reputable outside Web sites.
The higher the reputation of the outside
Web site, the better it will be for your rank-
ings. Search engines consider .edu (colleges
and universities) and .gov (government) Web
sites to be reputable and reliable sources.
Garner inbound links. When people link from their
Web site to your Web site, it’s called an inbound link.
Search engines like when you have sites linking to
your site, especially if the other site is reputable.
create a maintenance plan. Search engines love
content, especially new content. By continually adding new pages to your Web site, you show the search
engines that your site is well maintained. Add your
keywords when writing blog entries or articles, as
these new pages are typically indexed quickly by the
search engines.
While SEO tasks seem daunting, they’re quite
manageable if you do one at a time. A site that’s
been optimized for search engines will bring more
business your way.
