short note with a link to their video.
I’ll view the video, and if I think
there might be a fit, I’ll bookmark
the link and refer to it when we
start our speaker selection process in
What do speakers do that drives you crazy?
At the pre-hire stage, some speakers
will spend 30 to 40 minutes reviewing
their program’s content. In my mind,
they are already hired and I just need
a two-minute overview. I also want the
event to go seamlessly. It makes my life
and my staff’s lives very difficult when
speakers do not respect our process
and system. Sometimes, they want their
room to be moved closer to the expo,
or they want an extra chair brought in
when the room is already over capacity,
or they want handouts distributed in a
Why do you use professional speakers?
I hire professional speakers because of
the quality of their programs. You get
what you pay for.
What emerging topics will require more
Sustainability and green topics will be
more in demand in the future. We are
in an environmental age and there are
very few recognizable names beyond
former U.S. Vice President Al Gore specializing in this area.
What changes have you noticed in the
speaking profession in the last decade?
More professional speakers are willing to customize their programs for my
meeting. Jim Pancero is an excellent
example. After a two-minute talk with
Jim about the kind of program I need,
he gets it. I have no worries because he
will show up with exactly what I want.
does the certified Speaking Professional
(cSP) accreditation have any meaning
Yes, especially when searching and finding a speaker that I do not know. When
speakers’ videos prove they are good
and they have the CSP logo on their
Web site, it puts them higher in my
level of consideration.
