to a large screen. We planned a streaming event for 1,000 people in Moscow,
but the broadband issues there didn’t
make it feasible, so I recorded a video,
sent it over and it worked fine.
Wanna Get High?
There is the creative high that comes
from being a professional speaker; for
example:
• Holing up some place, channeling a
stream of consciousness to write a
book in a week
• Facilitating a retreat or leading a
Mastermind while electrifying ideas
are flying around the room like
lightning
• Sculpting a new keynote that you
know is going to crush
• Speaking with attendees after your
speech and knowing that what you
have said really made a difference.
And it’s that last one that really
makes what we do worth it …
It’s a defining moment when you realize
that what you do has meaning and you
are really making a difference in the lives
of the people in your audience. And that’s
when the business really becomes a part
of you.
No one likes to talk about it, but there
is a certain amount of narcissism involved
in being a speaker. Many of us join the
business initially because of the adulation,
money and fame it can bring.
And there is a certain amount of
egotism required to believe that what
you have to say is important and people
should listen to you. Initially, it’s the standing ovations, interviews and publicity that
make the speaking business seem very
glamorous.
But as you mature, the goals of your
programs evolve from being amazing
on the platform, to creating something
amazing for the audience members.
Instead of filtering things through how you
look and perform, you start to plan your
programs more for how they can help
people achieve the results they are seeking.
Your focus switches from you to them.
