In any social strategy, it’s key to have a hashtag word
or phrase where everyone can join in. Social sharing
for Influence is something we really wanted to improve
upon from past years, including the ability for us to
connect with each other before, during, and after the
event using Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We
immediately started using #Influence18 as an anchor
hashtag—a way to centralize the conversation, by
mentioning it from the main stage during our promo
at Influence 2017, stating that we’d be monitoring it
throughout the year and that people using
it would be featured on main stage in 2018.
What we didn’t anticipate (but are
thrilled about) was the way another
hashtag emerged, #redpill. We asked NSA
members, using a Matrix reference, to
choose the red pill and join us at Influence
2018, and people started using #redpill as
part of the Influence social postings. So now
we use both.

What do you get when you combine a geeky com- munication and technology expert with a nerdy social media speaker? Well, in this case, you get
your two Influence 2018 co-chairs, and one heck of a conven-
tion onboarding experience!
When we took on this volunteer role, we immediately
agreed on a few things. First, we wanted to really demystify
technology and show its true power to help us better engage
communities, connect to our audiences, and expand our con-
tent. And, second, we wanted to bring everyone along with us
on the journey, using our skill sets in a way that invites people
behind the scenes and as part of the co-creation process … of
course, using tech and social media.
Here are three key parts of the strategy we’ve used to
engage with both the heads and the hearts of ourselves and
those we serve, in an e;ort to bring the most connected
Influence experience NSA has ever seen. And some ideas for
how you can use them too.
