In the frazzle phase, your brain is
stressed with very high levels of cortisol
and your fight or flight responses are
activated. This is a very unhealthy men-
tal and physical state for prolonged
periods. However, since your fight-or-
flight mechanisms are turned on, we
are still in the “action” phase and can
counteract the elevation of cortisol by
doing the following:
Take care of all the mundane, yet
necessary, functions of running a
business, such as filing, organizing
and creating to-do lists.
Tie-up any loose-end projects that
just needed that final touch.
Take a break and socialize.
By recognizing the three states of
brain arousal, you can adjust your activities throughout the day to maximize
your peak performance levels. When
you awaken, enjoy boosted creativity
for brainstorming. When the “flow”
switch flips on, you’re driven to be
highly productive and tackle the big
jobs. When you’re frazzled, rest or do
some mindless filing. Recognize that the
stages are not linear; you may bounce
between them throughout the day. Your
ability to use the stages for peak performance drives results, which enhances
your confidence and productivity.

through these three stages several times
a day, it is beneficial to know how to
harness the benefits of each state.
In the disengagement phase, the
brain is in a state of relaxation. During
relaxation, serotonin (calming neuro-
transmitter) levels and dopamine (moti-
vation hormone) in the brain are at a
maximum, while cortisol (stress hor-
mone) levels are at a minimum. This is
the perfect cocktail for creativ-
ity. So, when you feel bored or
generally don’t want to work
on your business, this is the
ideal time to harness creative
solutions for your problems.
As a speaker and business owner,
I do the following activities
during this phase:

In the flow phase, the brain is
focused on one thing and one thing
only—the task at hand. It will override
any impulse to be distracted. This is the
only phase you are truly “in the zone”
and can accomplish a lot. It is the
action phase, with the perfect balance
of cortisol, adrenaline and dopamine,
and the phase that you want to pro-
long. As entrepreneurs, I recommend
the following activities during this

are dependent on your levels of hormones and neurotransmitters.
I have had lengthy discussions about
the state of the brain during these
phases with Marcel Daane, author of
Headstrong Performance, and how to
extract some form of performance in
every state. Daane says that during
disengagement, the brain is understimu-lated and bored, yet is relaxed and
actively looking for novelty and reward.
Could this be the perfect moment to
harness creativity, instead of scanning
your Facebook feed or checking emails?
During the flow state, the brain is in
the “zone” where it is perfectly tuned
for optimal attention and performance.
It typically occurs in the morning
before facing the challenges of the day.
It is why mornings are the most optimal
time to make huge strides. As the day
goes on and you are faced with various
stressors, the brain can be pushed to the
right side of the curve, entering the
dreaded frazzle zone. In this state, the
brain is still very active; however, it is
where conflicts with others can arise.
Could it be the moment to take a
So, to create peak performance, you
cannot simply hope your brain will
remain in the flow state forever. Of
course, this would be ideal, but know-ing ahead that your brain will traverse
