Not long after, the question of
building our permanent residence
was added to the agenda of our
weekly chapter meetings. Of one
mind and one heart, we voted YES.
Within a month, 640 acres of land
were donated to us, an architect
stepped up to help, and thousands
of dollars came our way. Every time
I spoke about the project, more contractors, engineers, suppliers and
others were eager to participate.
When I was asked to take on
the role of general contractor, I
said YES. My YES gave me the inner
strength to keep pace with the massive,
fast-moving project resulting in a
monastery worth millions, which
was dedicated debt-free only three-and-a-half years later.
I shared this life experience, which
gave me a blueprint for living YES, at a
TEDx Talk. Now, I will provide you
with a few techniques to help you live
your YES, and transform it into practical successful strategies for your work.
YES is the gateway to flourishing as
speakers. YES is the tool that will give
you clear discernment for what you
choose to walk toward and for what
you choose to walk away from. NO
is a response to a defined or undefined
YES. You need to say YES to the building blocks of your speaking business.
When I built the monastery, I cast a
wide net. This meant talking about my
business and making appointments that
would serve the end goal—every day.
As a speaker, you need to cast a wide
net, speak confidently about why you
are worthy of being hired, and what
the power of your message will be for
audiences. Do not hold back from
possibilities—putting yourself out there
generously will yield a generous return.
The strength to put yourself out there
marketing and completing forms and
applications—relies upon being focused
on what you are doing and why you are
Focus is one of the most important
keys to success. It gives you the consistent energy to act in ways that will benefit your business, and is always
rewarded with return. Staying focused
is a developed skill, and it is possible
for you. Tools abound to help with
focus. Here are just four that I have
STAY CLOSE TO THE CORE
OF YOUR MESSAGE.
Your message is your wisdom and
expertise. Enjoy this fruit of your hard
work. Visit it and revisit it. Build upon
it. Take time to write about the
methodology that underlies what
Your words can become old to us as
we continue to change. So, once a day,
for just five minutes, write about your
core message in some new way. After
visiting and revisiting your message,
reach out to one possible organization
a day with this renewed energy. Combining reflection with action sets great
opportunities in motion. And your
message stays alive!
REMEMBER WHY YOU
ARE A SPEAKER.
At least once a month, reconnect
with why you are a speaker. Acknowledge your gift, commitment and excitement when you book a talk and get to
use your voice to share wisdom and
practical insight with others. Your success in business is not only about the
message; it is also about how you
At least once a year, choose a program or class to learn more about communication—even if you think you’re
an expert. After all, the best speakers
are the ones who are lifelong learners.
The more you are alive in your real-ization that you doing what you long to
do, the more people will want to hire
you. To keep that fire alive, you might
need to hire someone to help sell on
your behalf, for example.
Through my business coach, I have
learned that the people who are most
successful in their entrepreneurial business are the ones who hire help, even if
they have no budget for it up front. You
can stay focused on stoking your passion and exploring your gift while your
virtual assistant, social media director
or marketing guru can focus on what
they are good at. And in the end, both
contribute to your success.
As you call on leads, create a new
one sheet, negotiate the contract terms,
or even say no to an offer to speak that
does not meet your criteria, express
gratitude. Let gratefulness be in your
words and in your attitude.
On a physical level, the body relaxes
and expands. Businesses pick up on this
quality within you, and they will be
