As speakers, having a flexible schedule and the ability to spend time with and care for our loved ones can be a massive perk. The ensuing financial uncertainty and conflicts of identity, however, are decidedly among the challenges of our profession.
I recently evaluated the pros and cons of family leave in
anticipation of the birth of my first baby.
Since long before I became pregnant, I noted that my business
offers unlimited unpaid family leave. Wanting to be prepared, I’ve
been working to better understand—and plan for—getting my
business ready to survive without me for a while so that it’s in
good shape when I come back to run it in the midst of my new
competing responsibilities. NSA members have generously shared
their family leave stories, including taking care of new babies and
providing support for loved ones who were sick or dying.
Here are a few of the main lessons they had to share.
