We all understand the importance of change. We also know that while change brings chal- lenges, it is the only way to remain relevant.
How we deal with change plays a key role in shaping our
character and defining our values. Every transformation
has the opportunity to build confidence and capabilities,
and, generally, the more difficult the project, the stronger
the organization will be.
Even with a strong plan, transformation is rarely
smooth. Market conditions may be volatile. The pressures from the change itself may seem even more intense
than the old pressures of working with outdated systems,
approaches, or structures. Essentially, there are two cer-tainties with change: Change that matters is never easy,
and you can’t communicate too much or too often.
For almost a year, you’ve been hearing about an NSA
“pivot.” Business practices, culture, technology, and association management had
evolved faster than NSA did. Right now, we are one year into a multi-year journey
and have made great strides to sustain our organization, ensure we remain relevant, and continue creating compelling value for professional speakers.
In the past 16 months since I joined NSA, I’ve heard valuable feedback and
ideas directly from members, chapter leaders, volunteers, and past presidents.
We are fortunate to have members who genuinely care about and want to positively contribute to NSA. This helped us identify areas of exposure and risk,
as well as opportunities to provide more tangible member value.
While we have made progress, we have an opportunity to communicate
more effectively. Here is what has already started and what you can count on
when it comes to communicating and receiving your feedback:
Quarterly Virtual Town Halls, which are held no more than six weeks after
each Board meeting
State of the Association session at Influence
Dedicated video announcements in community groups and through emails
An online “Idea Bank” regularly reviewed by NSA leadership
NSA is an association of members for members. We are blessed to have the
financial reserves and firm foundation on which to build our change because of
the efforts of our longtime members. When you meet speakers who have been
a part of NSA for many years, thank them for this. I do. They have provided us
the margin and freedom of action to transform this remarkable association.
Our sole agenda is member service. We won’t always get everything right,
but we will always have the right intentions. Together, we are dedicated to
honoring the Spirit of Cavett and ensuring that NSA continues to serve professional speakers in compelling ways for decades to come.
