FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS
Linda Swindling, JD, CSP, says, “A thinner book has takeaway value.”
She says some clients balk at a high-priced book for each attendee, but
they see the benefits of a low-priced, small book. Linda’s “Passport
to Success” book series, published through her Dallas-based professional development company, Journey On, has established her place
in the market. The books come with little storage spots, passport
holders, a notebook to hold them on, zippered travel pouches, and a
larger version with a headset package to keep them safe.
Hayley Foster, MEd, accidentally became an expert in something
of great interest—how to master the short talk—and she recognized
the value of timing to produce an excellent short book. She treated
the process as if she were writing a full book. She emphasized the
need for an ISBN and structure, including binding and setup that
demonstrated that this was a serious contribution to our toolboxes.
She is a short-talk expert and wants readers to know you would not
take a full keynote and convert it into a short TED-type talk. Nor
should you take a full-length book and convert it into a mini- or short
book. The book, like the talk, should stand on its own. Short is good!
Mark LeBlanc, CSP, published his mini-book in 1999, and it
became an underground bestseller. He spent nothing to promote
it, and his distribution has peaked at 75,000 copies. That’s a mighty
big volume for a small book. He also discovered an “accidentally
brilliant” pricing strategy. When a client orders 25 or more mini-books, they get 25 percent off; 50 or more, they get 50 percent off.
He has sold more than 800 orders of 50 copies or more.
